    ¡Hola!

    Intent

At Berewood Primary School, we want children to enjoy learning Spanish and feel confident having a go. We aim to help children become curious, kind and respectful global citizens who understand that people around the world may speak different languages but share many similarities too.

Children learn how to communicate in Spanish by listening, speaking, reading and writing. They discover new words and phrases that they can use in real-life situations, such as greetings, asking questions and talking about themselves. We also help children learn about Spanish-speaking countries and cultures so they understand and appreciate the world around them.

As children learn Spanish, they practise helpful learning skills such as remembering new vocabulary, practising sounds, building sentences and using grammar. We show them how Spanish can be different from English and encourage them to be confident, resilient and proud of their progress. Our lessons are designed so that all children can succeed, feel included and enjoy learning a new language.

Our Spanish curriculum follows the National Curriculum and helps children to:

    • understand and respond to spoken and written Spanish
    • speak with growing confidence and improving pronunciation
    • write simple sentences for different purposes
    • enjoy and explore different types of writing in Spanish

    How We Teach Spanish (Implementation)

Spanish is carefully planned across the school so learning builds step by step as children move through each year group. It is taught by a native Spanish-speaking teacher from Mariposa Languages, helping them hear correct pronunciation and learn authentic language.

Lessons are planned so children revisit and practice key words, sounds and grammar regularly, helping them remember what they have learned. Children gradually move from learning single words to building sentences and having short conversations.

To support confidence in speaking, children follow a step-by-step speaking journey. They work towards clear goals and colour them in as they achieve them, helping them recognise their progress and feel motivated to keep improving.

Through engaging lessons, we help children develop confidence, independence and a love of learning languages.

    Impact

By the time children leave Berewood Primary School, they have developed a positive attitude towards learning languages and the confidence to communicate in Spanish using words, sentences and simple conversations. They can understand spoken and written Spanish, pronounce words accurately and apply grammar patterns they have learned. Children are proud of their progress and are willing to take risks when speaking, showing resilience and independence.

Our Spanish curriculum helps children build cultural awareness and respect for others, preparing them for life in a diverse and connected world. Pupils are well prepared for further language learning at secondary school, with strong foundations in vocabulary, pronunciation and language-learning skills. Most importantly, children leave Berewood with an enjoyment of languages and an understanding of how learning a foreign language can open doors to new experiences and opportunities.
