Physical Education

Intent

At Berewood Primary School, we want every child to enjoy being active and to feel confident taking part in Physical Education. Our PE curriculum is inclusive and designed so that all pupils, including those with additional needs, can succeed and make progress from their own starting points.

We provide a wide range of physical activities and sports to help children develop their physical skills, fitness, and understanding of how to live healthy, active lives. Through PE, children learn important life skills such as teamwork, resilience, fairness, and respect for others. While we encourage healthy competition, our main focus is enjoyment, participation, and building confidence so that every child feels valued and included.

Our curriculum follows the National Curriculum and supports children to:

  • develop confidence and skills in a wide range of physical activities
  • be active for sustained periods of time
  • take part in both competitive and non-competitive activities
  • understand the importance of a healthy, active lifestyle
  • feel included and supported, whatever their ability

How we teach PE (Implementation)

Children take part in at least two PE lessons each week. Lessons are carefully planned to help children improve their agility, balance, coordination, and overall fitness, while also developing their knowledge and understanding of health and wellbeing. Activities are adapted so that all children can take part and be challenged appropriately.

Our PE curriculum is enriched through a variety of extra opportunities, including sports clubs, breakfast club activities, festivals, and competitions with other local schools. These experiences allow children to apply their skills, build confidence, and enjoy being active in different ways.

We also encourage physical activity beyond lessons. Active break times and lunchtimes are an important part of school life and have been enhanced through our Play Project. With the support of our trained lunchtime staff and sports coaches, children can choose from a range of activities such as building in the construction area, scooting on didicars and ride-ons, climbing and exploring the trim trail and taking part in ball games. They can also choose hula hooping, space hopping, and bouncing on pogo bouncers in the Play Hub alongside many more opportunities for active, imaginative play with toy cars, trains and small world resources.  These opportunities allow children to develop physical skills, creativity, and social interaction, while also learning how to manage and negotiate risk safely, make sensible choices, and build confidence and independence through active play.

Impact

Our children develop a positive attitude towards physical activity and understand why being active is important for both their physical and mental health. They make good progress in their skills and confidence as they move through the school and are proud of their personal achievements.

Children show enthusiasm for PE and enjoy taking part in clubs, festivals, and competitions, regardless of their abilities or needs. By the time they leave Berewood Primary School, pupils are confident, motivated, and well prepared to lead healthy, active lives.
