Mathematics

Intent

At Berewood Primary School, our intent for mathematics is to ensure that all children become confident, capable and enthusiastic mathematicians. In line with the National Curriculum, we aim for pupils to develop a strong understanding of number, fluency in mathematical skills, the ability to reason mathematically and confidence in solving problems.

We want children to see maths as meaningful and relevant, helping them make sense of the world around them. Our curriculum encourages children to think deeply, talk about their thinking and approach challenges with resilience and a positive attitude. We believe that all children can succeed in maths, and our curriculum is designed to provide equality of opportunity, supporting every child to achieve their full potential.

How We Teach Maths (Implementation)

Our mathematics curriculum is delivered through the White Rose Maths scheme, which is fully aligned with the National Curriculum and provides a clear progression of learning from Early Years to Year 6. Teaching is carefully sequenced so that new learning builds on what children already know, with key concepts revisited regularly to support long‑term retention.

Lessons follow a mastery approach, where children explore mathematical concepts in depth before moving on. We use a concrete, pictorial and abstract (CPA) approach to help children understand concepts securely, supported by high‑quality models, representations and mathematical language. Reasoning and problem‑solving are central to every unit of work, encouraging children to explain their thinking and apply their learning in a range of contexts.

In EYFS, Key Stage 1 and 2, children also take part in the Mastering Number programme, which develops strong number sense, fluency and confidence with number through short, focused daily sessions. This programme supports children in developing automaticity and a deep understanding of number relationships, laying essential foundations for future learning.

Assessment is used regularly to identify gaps and adapt teaching, ensuring all children receive the support or challenge they need to succeed.

Impact

As a result of our maths curriculum, children at Berewood Primary School develop a secure understanding of mathematical concepts and the confidence to apply their skills independently. They can reason clearly, use accurate mathematical vocabulary and tackle problems with perseverance. Children become fluent in key skills and show enjoyment and curiosity in their learning.

By the time they leave Berewood, pupils are well prepared for the next stage of their education, with a strong foundation in number, calculation and problem‑solving. Most importantly, children leave with a positive mindset towards maths, believing that effort, practice and resilience lead to success.
